January WGN-TV becomes a CW television network affiliate.

March 24 Michael Jordan's return to basketball and debut at the new United Center translates into record ratings for WGN-TV, the exclusive Chicago carrier of the Chicago Bulls vs. Orlando Magic game. The game garnered an all-time high regular season rating and an all-time high WGN Sports rating of 41, which translated into a 59 share of Chicago viewing households. Via WGN-TV's superstation coverage, the game delivered a 4.4 rating in its cable universe. The huge Chicago rating plus national cable viewing generated a total average audience of 2.9 million homes, an estimated 4.5 million viewers.

June WGN-TV is the first Chicago television station to launch a site on the World Wide Web.
