Mia's Wedding
Mia, the woman who took in Lorelai when she was pregnant and helped raise her and Rory is getting married. The wedding is in North Carolina and originally, Christopher was going to go with her. Lorelai would love it if Rory would accompany her on the road trip.
At first, Rory says she can't go. With her senior year wrapping up, she has way too much to do. Plus, Logan's going through some tough times since his giant and costly business deal went awry. She wants to be there for him. However, Rory has a change of heart when she returns to the NYC apartment and finds Logan surfing You Tube instead of doing actual work. He's been like this for a while.
Mitchum shows up at the apartment and he's not in a good mood. Logan hasn't returned any of his calls and he knows that Logan went to Vegas. Mitchum tells Logan that if he were one of his employees, he'd be fired by now. After he leaves, Rory tells Logan that she agrees with his dad. Logan's been acting very irresponsible and she won't stand by and support "every stupid thing he does." Rory calls Lorelai back and says she's in on the road trip.
Emily overhears talk of the road trip and books a spa vacation in Charlotte so she can come along for the ride. After all, once Rory graduates she won't have much time to spend with her.
Pack up Emily's car - she refuses to drive 800 miles in an "Army vehicle" - Lorelai, Emily and Rory are hitting the road!
Life's a journey
Emily and Lorelai should not be confined in a car together for long trips. Emily refuses to speed since she got pulled over for DWI and Lorelai won't stop playing with the windows. They stop for food, because Emily won't deal with drive-through food, and it's not exactly the 5-star meal she's accustomed. One funny moment is Emily ordering a glass of Chardonnay. She reminds the waitress "that's the clear one."
The most uncomfortable part of the trip is when Lorelai reminisces about Mia and all the fun memories they had when Rory was a baby. It's uncomfortable to Emily and Rory picks up on it. She asks Lorelai to "dial back" on the Mia talk. Rory's especially concerned about what will happen to Emily's and Lorelai's relationship after she graduates. Lorelai says they'll be fine.
When they get to the hotel Mia calls. Upon hearing that Emily's there, she insists she come to the wedding too. Emily, plagued by etiquette, feels that it's rude to say no and agrees to go.
At the wedding, Emily turns up her civil charm, but she does give out a couple backhanded compliments and asks one guess to get her a glass of water. Emily clearly doesn't want to take part in the wedding: she turns down a request by the groom to dance with him and she goes over her schedule during the reception.
Lorelai needs a drink to take the edge off of Emily's behavior. See that Lorelai's stressed, Mia explains that it must be difficult for Emily to have lost contact with her daughter for so many years. Lorelai always thought Emily considered her an embarrassment. Mia tells Lorelai that years ago, Emily visited with her in Stars Hollow and asked for pictures of Lorelai and Rory growing up. Lorelai never knew that.
Later, Lorelai overhears Emily beaming to Mia about how successful Rory is. All of these moments have an effect on Lorelai. When they return to the hotel, Lorelai tells her mother that she knows it must have been hard on her when she left home. Then Rory, Lorelai and Emily get some junk food and rent "The Pursuit of Happyness."
Where's Logan?
Logan shows up unexpectedly at Mia's wedding. Paris found the address and gave it to him. Rory is not interested in his grand gesture of flying over to see her, nor in what he has to say. She leaves him standing by his car while she goes to have cake.
Eventually, she makes it outside and Logan apologizes for his childish behavior. He realizes his dad was right, he should have been fired. Knowing that, he says he quit the Huntzberger Group. He said Mitchum was cool and collected, but probably angry and maybe a dash proud that he stood up for himself.
Lane, Zach and the twins
Zach's doing well as a waiter in the diner. He's really feeling the Luke vibe and invites Luke over for dinner. Luke tries to get out of it, but Zach says he told Lane that he was coming weeks ago so he can't back out now.
At dinner, Lane and Zach ask Luke to be godfather to their twin boys. They've never had a big extended family and think the boys will need a strong fatherly presence in their life. (Luke is a good father - what a difference a year makes!) After some persuading, Luke agrees to do it.
The next day, Zach shows up at the diner earlier than usual. Luke's trying to go through his usual routine - in silence - but Zach can't stop talking. He's babbling on about mix tapes, head wounds and circumcision, Luke finally pulls him aside. It's obvious that Zach is freaking out about becoming a dad soon. That's Ok. He'll get into "Dad mode" and it will all work out.
Later on, Zach apologizes for going a little crazy earlier. Luke says it's no big deal. Then the phone rings: Lane's water broke. Now Zach is totally confused. He wanders around the diner wondering what to do. Luke takes control of the situation. He says the diner's closed. Last person out should turn out all the lights. He'll drive Lane and Zach to the hospital.
Lane has her babies and e-mails a picture to Rory on her phone.
