Your dad and I split up
Over an impromptu drive, Lorelai breaks the news to Rory that she and Christopher broke up. Rory's the first person she's told (besides the Quick-E-Mart guy) and Lorelai dreads having to tell Emily. While on the drive, they run out of gas in the middle of nowhere and set out walking.
Mocktail hour
There's a cloud over Friday Night Dinner: Richard is still on the mend and doing a Hugh Hefner impression with his robe and pajamas on 24/7, unhealthy foods and alcohol are both on the forbidden list, and Lorelai has to lie and say that Christopher is traveling for business.
Luckily, Emily was able to "steal" a top chef named Stefan who is skilled in making meals that incorporate Richard's new dietary requirements, but Lorelai isn't so lucky to get a cocktail. It's mocktails like Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers from now on. Richard hates the whole thing and can't stop whining about the constant serving of fish for dinner, nor can he seem to tear himself away from watching old golf matches on TV. Emily doesn't know what to do. Nether does Lorelai, but for a different reason. She can't seem to find a good time to tell her parents that her marriage is over.
Richard's incessant complaints eventually force the new cook to quit. Lorelai enlists the help of Sookie who's able to disguise healthy foods to look delicious. One problem solved, but Emily has another: Richard's accountant keeps calling about tax forms, but she doesn't know what he needs.
Emily decides that mocktails are not going to cut it. She pours herself a scotch, gives Lorelai a bottlb of vodka and Lorelai, a successful business owner, gives Emily tax tips 101. Then, Lorelai abruptly tells Emily that her marriage is over. Emily admits she doesn't know what to say. They go back to doing the taxes instead.
Over a couple hours and many drinks, Emily learns more about Richard's business than she ever has - who knew he owned some windmills in Palm Springs? Emily's impressed with Lorelai. Emily likens herself to a canoe: she needs her partner's help so she can steer straight. Contrastly, Lorelai is like a kayak: she can steer by herself, and has for many years. This is the softer, tipsier side of Emily that's rarely seen. She tells Lorelai that she's done very well for herself without a husband, and that even though Lorelai's marriage broke up, "it's not such a disaster." She can take care of herself. Emily adds... Lorelai may even meet someone else someday. Talk about not knowing what to say!
Unfortunately, the next morning Lorelai wakes up with a bit of a hangover, and Emily wakes up per usual: planning DAR events and complaining about the fact that she has to cancel her daughter's wedding party and lose some of the deposit. Which Emily do you prefer: tipsy or sober?
Happy Birthday Logan
It's Logan's big 25th birthday and Rory wants it to be celebrated properly. She starts with an attempt at breakfast in bed, but then really turns up her efforts when she hears that Logan's never had a real birthday party. He had parties but they had fussy food and were attended by kids he didn't really know. She decides to give him a birthday that showcases all the highlights he missed using her own birthdays as inspiration. Do you like to celebrate your birthday?
Surprisingly, Mitchum remembers Logan's birthday too and he wants to take Rory and Logan out for dinner. At the restaurant he's in odd mood - he tells Rory that the journalism field needs Rory. She's puzzled to say the least. This is the man who once told her she didn't have what it took to be a journalist.
Then, he congratulates Rory for keeping Logan focused. He tells Rory he's happy "their on the same page." Mitchum says that he and Rory need to figure out Logan's next step and says that he's happy to help Rory get started with her career too. She can pick any of his newspapers to work at. He toasts to them "being on the same page." Rory raises her glass, but she's confused.
Back at Logan's apartment Rory creates a birthday explosion. There's a pinata, Twister, pin the tail on the moose (the donkey didn't work out) and Logan loves it. Rory tells Logan about her weird conversation with his dad, and Logan tells her not to worry - she was just "Huntzbergered." Remember when Luke and Lorelai were "Gilmored"?
Logan's mood takes a turn when he gets a call from one of his associates. They've received a cease and desist order because the company and patent he invested in is already owned by somebody else. Logan keeps this bad news to himself. What is Logan going to do?
You're lonely and we have moths
Liz and T.J. descend upon the diner with their daughter Doula. Liz at first says it's because they know with April out of the house, Luke must be feeling lonely. The real reason is that their house is being fumigated because of a moth problem.
Luke lets them and their numerous pieces of luggage stay at his place. Doula's crying in the middle of the night awakens Luke and as a bonus he gets to hear Liz and T.J. talk about what they think he should do now that Lorelai's broken up with her husband. Liz is pro-Lorelai, T.J. at first is not sure she's the one for his brother-in-law. They trash his place, eventually decide that he and Lorelai are meant to be together and reluctantly move out - they were having so much fun!
