At the Dragonfly
The Town Selectman duties are already wearing on Jackson. Lorelai joins in with the rest of Stars Hollow and tries to sneak her two parking space permit (which she had been battling Taylor about for months) through Jackson.
The Elder Gilmores
Rory meets her grandfather for lunch and based upon his reading choices, The Fall of the Roman Empire which he had started reading in 1968, she realizes that he misses her grandmother a lot. Also, he worries about Emily, specifically wondering if Emily got her 6-month car maintenance done. However, he doesn't want to talk to Emily directly. Rory tries to open up the lines of communication between the two of them, but fails.
Meanwhile, Emily has been working on her own projects sans Richard. She had a panic room installed since she's now "a woman living alone." Unfortunately, the metal monstrosity was delivered to the foyer where everybody can see it. At Friday dinner with Lorelai and Rory, Emily gets in a tizzy when she tries to make the drinks, as usual, but there's no gin to be found. She decides to bust into the poolhouse to raid Richard's drink cart. Not wanting to waste a good evening of breaking and entering, Emily goes snooping around the poolhouse. She is horribly disturbed to find packs of breath mints and a very-out-of-character glittery vest in Richard's closet. She's outraged that he would have a vest like that. They scurry away.
New Place
Dean is currently staying at his friends Kyle's house instead of his parent's house. This makes Rory's odd-hour visits a bit easier to manage now that his parents aren't around to give Rory the cold shoulder. However, with one parental problem solved, he's still feels an awkwardness between Lorelai and himself. Lorelai notices it too, and hoping to bring back some of the good times, suggests a doubledate with Luke and her. Luke agrees to the date, but he didn't even know Rory and Dean were seeing each other!
The Band
Zach has a tough time concentrating at practice and Lane tries to find out what he thinks about her abrupt announcement of her feelings toward him. Zach, however, has no desire to talk about anything. On their next meeting, Lane takes back what she said and declares that they are just friends again, which makes Zach really confused. Later, he goes over to the diner while she's working and explains to her that it takes him a LONG time to "process things" and that she should give him some more time to let him consider things.
Still Not Speaking To Each Other
Just in case anybody gets locked into the panic room, Emily wants to give Lorelai the secret code. It's all 1's. Emily doesn't know how to change it. Lorelai suggests she give the secret code to Richard, but Emily doesn't think Richard would save her.
Lorelai stops by - without scheduling a meeting - to see Richard. He's surprised. Lorelai tries to figure out what Richard has been up to and tries to get the bottom of the glitter vest. Apparently, Richard has joined a barbershop quartet and they wear period costumes. She suggests that she let Emily know some of the things currently going on in his life. Later on, Richard actually makes his way over to talk about the property tax bill in person with Emily and he lets her know about the barbershop quartet he joined. Emily's news, the panic room, speaks for itself.
Cool Hand Luke
For the doubledate Lorelai sets up an evening of good, clean Stars Hollow fun: grab food at Jojo's and then head over to the Black, White and Red movie theater. Incidentally, Kirk works there. He lets them know that the first reel of the scheduled movie "Cool Hand Luke" burned. In its place the group selects "The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking" to be shown.
Luke is more interested in Dean's moves on Rory than the movie. Lorelai notices it, and believing Dean is behaving fine, tells Luke to stop copping such an attitude with Dean.
The uncomfortable movie date is followed by an even tougher post-date gathering at Lorelai's. When Dean asks for a beer, Luke flips out. Hoping to salvage the night, Rory and Lorelai bring out the game Bop It, but Luke and Dean's round goes from competitive to angry quick. After Dean and Rory leave, Luke admits he feels like Dean is not good enough for her, nor does he consider Jess good enough for her. He thinks maybe a prince would be good enough for Rory.
