It's not Christmas without each other
Lorelai and Rory each vowed not to celebrate Christmas while Rory was away in London visiting Logan. Now it's Christmas overload in January. With Christopher's help, they bring in a seven, sad evergreen trees - after all they were only $1 each - there's even one for the kitchen.

They get Chris up to speed on some of their holiday traditions: red and green m&m's in their cereal, pretending to bake cookies, peppermint stick coffee from Weston's and hanging their stockings on the banister. Chris, of course, wants to start new traditions. He has brand new stockings for everybody and he wants to go caroling, but judging from his voice - he probably shouldn't. Gigi's on hand too, and if Santa's coming to town, she doesn't care about anything else.

Rory's in good spirits because in London Logan apologized for being obnoxious at dinner with Lucy and Marty. He also admitted he was a little jealous about Marty. Her Logan problems are fixed, but Rory still hasn't heard from Lucy even though she's left several messages.

You're Back?
QUOTED
Michel to Luke when Luke shows up at The Dragonfly,

"Oh, you. I thought we were done with you."
Luke shows up at The Dragonfly and gets a chilly reception from Michel, but it seems like old times with Lorelai. Luke explains to Lorelai about Anna and her plan to move to New Mexico with April. He's pretty depressed about the whole thing. Lorelai agrees that going to court is the right thing for him to do. He asks Lorelai for a character reference to present in court. His sister Liz gave him one, but it's not the right tone. She agrees to do it and they awkwardly shake hands.

Later, Lorelai turns to Sookie for advice about the whole thing. Sookie mistakenly thinks that Lorelai is afraid to bring up old feelings, but that's not Lorelai's issue. She just wants it to be an amazing and powerful letter to help Luke, but she's having trouble getting started.

Everybody's celebrating Christmas in January
Unbeknownst to Anna, April secretly stops by the diner to visit Luke. Anna thinks she's at the Boston Museum of Science. Luke's happy to see her, but knows that he probably should take her back home, but he lets her stay for the day. Like Lorelai and Rory, Luke's celebrating Christmas late too, since April was away. He gets her a rock polisher. April loves it even though she already got one from her grandmother. She convinces Luke, that every girl could use two rock polishers. Meanwhile, amid the post-holiday cheer, Luke tries to be pro-New Mexico, but April's not in the mood.

Back in the fake Winter Wonderland, Lorelai, Rory and Gigi are all decked out in red, holiday sweaters stringing cranberry and popcorn. Lorelai's still trying to figure out what to write about Luke - her best idea is to have Rory write it instead. Rory's not on board for that, but it does give her an idea to write a letter to Lucy to apologize for the whole Marty incident. When Chris comes in, Lorelai doesn't say a word about the character reference to Chris - this doesn't go unnoticed by Rory.

They continue on their post-Christmas tour with a trip to Weston's for peppermint stick coffee, but they aren't serving it anymore. As the waitress points out repeatedly: Christmas is over. What do you think about celebrating in January?

Besides her disappointment over the coffee, Lorelai's bummed because she still hasn't written Luke's character reference yet. Rory wants to know why her mother isn't telling Christopher about the whole thing. Lorelai says that the truth is too complicated. She knows that Chris is on edge about Luke, then the wedding party went sour, so if he hears about the letter it's just one more thing to make him uneasy. When Chris comes looking to find her, Lorelai says that she's hiding a present, but really it's the letter for Luke. She lies and says she got Chris a fabulous present, but then realizes she needs to go shopping to actually deliver on that promise.

Lorelai and Rory go shopping for what seems to be everybody in Stars Hollow, and Lorelai decides to get Chris something really special for Christmas. They spot a telescope and are intrigued to go into the store. Coincidentally, Luke and April are shopping there as well. They are exchanging the rock polisher for a microscope. They all reminisce about Luke's gifts to Rory over the years — there was a lot of monogrammed items and a lot of unicorns. During the trip down memory Lane, Lorelai seems to remember what a special person Luke is. Inspiration!

Back to business
After shopping. April shares her many schemes to meet up with Luke, but he knows it's not right. Luke realizes that even though he doesn't see eye to eye with Anna, he needs to keep on trying. He has to do things the right way. April warns him that her mom hired a shark-type lawyer for the custody battle. Before heading home, April and Luke realize she has to leave her new present, the microscope, with Luke since her daytrip was a secret.

Back at Lorelai's she finally has the inspiration to write the letter. Lorelai sits down at the typewriter - yes, it's a typewriter - and clicks out the letter. Lorelai sneaks out of the house to mail the letter and makes the long walk back to her house.

Mother of twins and many moods
Meanwhile, Lane is huge and ornery. She makes Luke look like Mr. Sunshine. Zach and Mrs. Kim keep firing questions and suggestions at her - driving her insane. Hearing that her drums are in the closet, she demands a band practice. Zach complies but it's not very rock and roll. Instead of new riffs, Zach shows Brian different ways to hold a baby using his mandolin. Gil brings one of his children, Macon, to practice. And it's not music that Gil gets the most-psyched about, but the breast pump that Zach and Lane bought - apparently it's very gentle for women. Brian's quite interested too. Everybody is going baby crazy.... but Lane.

Why? Lane is so upset because now that she's pregnant, and soon to be a mother, her brief window to be her own person is closed. Zach cheers her up with tales of Sonic Youth and Mick Jagger who can still rock - even with kids. Mrs. Kim's omnipresence is bugging her too, but Zach smooths it all over. What a guy!

Should Lorelai have agreed to write Luke's character reference letter?
Yes, she's been close to him for years.
No, out of respect for Christopher, she should have said no.
I can't decide.

Do you feel bad for Christopher?
Yes - He's giving the marriage his all, and Lorelai's not.
No - Lorelai's treating him fine.
No - What goes around comes around!

Christmas in January is....
Lame. You missed the holiday, deal with it.
Good call: good sales, plenty of free time, it's still cold, why not?
Not for me, but they made it look cool.
