Original air date October 5, 2004

Friday Night Fights Lorelai and Rory are treated to a very awkward dinner with Emily. Richard isn't included and is supposed to stay in his new quarters: the pool house. Emily accuses Lorelai and Rory of wasting all their good conversation with Richard.

Ah, Romance Luke and Lorelai are not sure how/when they should go public with their romance. Lorelai sort of wants the town to know, but not really. Luke doesn't care either way. They decide to keep it under wraps for now. At the diner Luke appears to be his regular, grumpy self and refuses to flirt with Lorelai. However, when Lorelai ventures over to the counter he lets her know that her "jeans are working for him" and they make plans for their first official date.

New Digs Rory moves from her freshman living quarters to a double room with Paris. She wonders how it's possible that she beat Paris to the room on move-in day, but then Paris calls to tell her that Asher Fleming died at Oxford of a heart attack and Paris is taking charge of all the funeral arrangements.

New Friends Rory meets up with her friend Marty at school and they bump into a group of smug, rich kids who also know Marty. Last semester Marty was a bartender at their parties. The ringleader tells Marty he hopes his financial situation is still the same because they'd like to have him back: Marty makes a "killer margarita." Rory is not impressed by the way Marty is treated.

The First Date Luke and Lorelai's first date starts off awkwardly: he doesn't know if he should have driven over, Lorelai thought she was meeting him at the diner, he doesn't know if he should open the car door for her, etc. Off they go to a restaurant where Luke walks over to a reserved table and gets a warm reception from the owners. Luke admits that he knows the owners of the restaurant very well because he eats there 3 or 4 times a week. Lorelai realizes this restaurant is Luke's, Luke's!

At dinner, Lorelai tries to remember the first time they met. Luke knows the whole story: she busted into the diner and demanded coffee, interrupting other people. He told her to wait a minute. Then she asked him for his birthday, cut out his horoscope and wrote him a note on it and told him to keep it for good luck. He shows her the horoscope which he has had in his wallet for 8 years! Lorelai can't believe he held onto the horoscope.

The Next Morning Lorelai and Luke wake up to an early morning alarm, but unlike at Jason's place, they are in the same bed. Lorelai needs coffee and Luke tells her the only coffee is downstairs. Lorelai throws on one of Luke's plaid shirts and heads down to the diner to make some coffee, but oops! The diner's open! Everybody see's her! She walks back upstairs without saying a word to anybody. Consider their relationship unwrapped.

The Weird Theme Party Paris wants to throw a wake on campus to honor Asher's memory. Rory offers to help out and takes some fliers to post on campus. On the way, Rory runs into the guy who was rude to Marty. He doesn't remember meeting her, but he can tell she doesn't like him. They have a rapid fire debate over the way he treats people. She says he shouldn't treat people that have less money than him as servants, he says, it's OK if that's their job. As he's leaving he tells Rory he had fun talking with her.

Meanwhile, the wake is a success: there's wall to wall people and Paris is happy. Rory tells Marty, however, that most people don't know it's a wake but think it's actually a weird theme party.

The Town Meeting Taylor makes Luke and Lorelai's romance a main topic at the town meeting. He fears that if it goes sour as "most of Lorelai's relationships do," the town's businesses will suffer. Luke takes a stand (and all the charts Taylor made, incidentally) and says that he doesn't think it will go sour, but if it does, he'll close his diner and leave town. Lorelai is impressed that Luke stepped up.

Back at the Weird Theme Party Marty casually asks Rory if she has a boyfriend. She casually answers that she doesn't know. After the party she drives over to Dean's hoping to figure it out.
