Babysitting and Big News
With some muffin tops and coffee from Luke's for bribery, Sookie gets Lorelai to watch Davey and Martha. Actually, Lorelai doesn't think it's that big of a deal - she's happy to watch the kids so Sookie and Jackson can go skiing. Which, in reality, means Jackson goes skiing while Sookie reads books, but it's a nice day out.

Beyond her usual funny, quirky thing, Sookie is acting strangely. When Sookie and Jackson return from skiing, Sookie is upset. Jackson spilled her hot toddy and wouldn't let her get another, he also wouldn't let her entertain the idea of actually skiing. Sookie's not happy. Lorelai tells Jackson that she hasn't seen Sookie acting this strange since the last time she was pregnant. What can Jackson say to that except that Sookie is pregnant - she just doesn't know it. Apparently after Martha, Jackson didn't get the vasectomy as promised.

Jackson finally tells Sookie "the good news" and Sookie is outraged. She takes a walk with Lorelai and Lorelai reminds her of all the special moments that kids can bring. Sookie feels better and it's obvious that Lorelai's warming up to the idea of having another baby too.

Operation Finish Line
It's second semester of senior year and Paris is feeling the pressure. Soon she'll be kicked out of the safety of Yale and pushed into the harsh, real world. To prepare, she has devised a complicated plan called "Operation Finish Line" for herself and Rory (lucky Rory).

It involves applying for fellowships (whether or not they at all relate to your course of study), entering contests, taking pre-graduate exams like the MCATs and even some extracurricular activities like riding dining hall trays down a snowy hill. Rory is reluctantly dragged into the project and even enlists Richard's help. He has contacts with a Dean at Yale who could write a recommendation for Paris or Rory if need be. That would be another thing to cross off the list.

Rory's unable to get into Operation Finish Line full-time because she's still troubled by what happened with Lucy. She wrote her a letter of apology and still hasn't heard a thing from Lucy. Paris decides to end the "junior high" antics and confronts Lucy. Paris tells her that Rory is a kind and generous person that anybody would be lucky to call a friend. Done. Rory comes over to diffuse the awkward situation, but actually Paris did her a favor. All's good with Lucy, who incidentally broke up with Marty.

Level with me
Christopher is consumed with the project of installing a new flat screen TV at the house. Paul Anka lets him know in his own special way that the TV is crooked. To doublecheck he goes looking for the level, but what he finds instead is Lorelai's character reference letter for Luke. He reads it before Lorelai returns from Sookie's house.

Meanwhile, across town, Luke and Anna are at the custody hearing. Anna is smug and salty to Luke. She tells him that there's no way he's going to win the case. He's never had a stable relationship with anybody - why would the judge let him help raise a child? She even takes a shot at him for ruining things with Lorelai. All of this infuriates him - not the best attitude for a day in court.

Luke's lawyer advises Luke to not say a word during the proceedings, but he can't take it - he needs to say his peace. Anna jumps into the fray too, but Luke comes across as an angry guy. The scene does not look very promising for Luke until the judge reads Lorelai's character reference letter aloud.

Luke is so touched by the letter which talks about Luke's friendship and father-like influence for Rory over the years. However, to Chris, it reads like a love letter and he tells Lorelai as much. Chris is so upset. He feels like Lorelai is just "marking time" waiting for Luke to come back. Chris knows she still has feelings for Luke, after all, if the letter isn't a big deal then why did she hide it from him? Lorelai tells Chris she loves him, that she doesn't still love Luke, but he says he can't handle being her second choice. He can't be the rebound guy.

The next day Lorelai wakes up to an empty bed with only her Jeep in the driveway.

She gets a phone call from Luke. He won the court case! He gets shared custody of April which includes one weekend per month plus half of her summer. He's so thrilled and he tells Lorelai that her letter was a big help.

Back at Yale
Richard acting as a guest lecturer for Rory's economics class suffers what appears to be a heart attack.
