What's the drama:
With freaky, psycho "Derek" still out there, Peyton hasn't been able to sleep. So she's decided to paint her room… white. Though the rest of her is surrounded by darkness. With a baby on the way and at the height of basketball season, the young Scotts are faced with financial troubles and are considering to whom they should turn for a little help when their only mode of transportation -- the motorcycle, is repossessed. And Brooke is officially crushing on Nick, aka "Mall Boy," until she walks into English class and realizes that Mall Boy is in fact, her new teacher, Mr. Chavez.
What's up with Lucas:
Realizing that basketball is who he is, Lucas asks Whitey if he can rejoin the team. So he's in and he gets 15 minutes a game, due to his heart condition. Good guy that Lucas is, he allows Skills to keep the number 3 jersey that he gave him a few weeks ago and Whitey gives him number 22 -- Keith's old number. And it looks like Skills Taylor and the two Scott brothers have real chemistry on the court. Tree Hill is so close to the State Championship they can taste it.
What's up with Mouth:
Gigi informs her co-host, Mouth, that she plans to ask him out… on a date. Mouth is a little freaked. He doesn't think of her that way. But later, when Brooke tells Mouth all the different things he can say to blow off Gigi, they all sound a little like the lines that Rachel has been feeding him. So Mouth has a change of heart. He doesn't let Gigi ask him out. He asks her out instead.
What's up with Haley:
She tries to use the family credit card and discovers that they are over their limit. She's suddenly worried that if they can't make it now, how will they be able to make it after there's another mouth to feed? And that night -- just as Haley and Nathan are about to celebrate another Ravens win, their lights are shut off. Their money problems are serious. Nathan decides to go to his father to ask for help.
What's up with Brooke:
After a very awkward school day, Brooke heads back to English class and reintroduces herself to Mr. Nick. Alone. She's afraid that he'll be mad that she lied to him but instead, he kisses her. He tells her that he won't tell if she won't and they decide to carry on a student/teacher affair. And true to her word, Brooke keeps the affair quiet. She doesn't even tell her new BFF Rachel, so she's forced to sneak out of the house in the middle of the night in order to meet her new beau.
What's up with Whitey:
Dan pays a visit to Whitey's office asking what the coach could possibly know about the "art" on his wall. Whitey tells him that it's a phrase from the Bible about Cain and Abel and having the blood of your brother on your hands. Dan tries to tell Whitey that some prankster must think that he mistreated Keith when he was alive. But the wise coach tells Dan that we all have to atone for our sins and that judgment day is waiting for us all.
What's up with Peyton:
She's afraid to be alone and when Lucas tells her she can stay with him, she takes him up on it. The next day, Lucas pays a visit to the Marine base to see Peyton's real bro Derek who makes it clear that he's not interested in the girl's drama or in getting to know her at all. But he changes his mind and decides to come see his sister. They spend an afternoon getting to know each other. He takes her to the Marine's boxing ring and teaches her to defend herself.
What's up with Nathan:
A mystery Tree Hill alum named Dante has suddenly found Nathan Scott very interesting. And the guy's a giver. He even gets the dealership to give Nathan's car back. And even though it's against the rules for non-pro players to take monetary gifts Nathan accepts. Dante tells him that it's a favor from the dealership, not an offering of money. But Nathan knows better.
What's up with Dan:
When Nathan asks Dan for a little financial help, Dan reminds his son that he's now emancipated himself. And besides, when Dan makes a financial commitment, he wants a return and without Nathan's full commitment to Duke, there's no promise that there will be a return.
What's up with Nick:
As Mr. Nick and Brooke carry on their "secret" relationship, they get more and more lax. He even helps her prepare for TART, Textile Art Road Tour, a traveling design show that showcases new designers. Apparently a designer dropped out and Brooke is in. She's excited about the opportunity, but not nearly as excited as her new relationship. When Brooke tires of sneaking around Nick promises her that in three months she'll be out of school and then they can be together and it'll be perfectly legal.
How does it all wrap up:
That night the lights come back on at the young Scott residence, Nathan tells Haley that he took care of it and she thinks that he got the money from Dan. But as it turns out, Nathan borrowed a hefty sum from the unofficial Tree Hill alumni club -- Dante.
Across town, Derek tells Peyton that he's sorry but he won't be that guy for her and leaves her alone for the evening -- for the first time. But just as he leaves the house, he runs in to Lucas. Derek tells Lucas that he won't be that special guy for Peyton because she already has that guy -- and it's him. But he also advises Lucas to stop babying her, let her stand on her own two feet. And don't worry, he'll be doing some late night guard duty -- but she doesn't need to know that. Peyton needs to know that she can do it alone. And she can.
And finally, as Dan works on his computer late that night he gets an IM from REDRUM telling him they know what he did.
