"Born Under a Bad Sign" Recap
Oh, Supernatural – when you're on, you're so very on. This episode kicked all sorts of butt, and we can't find anything to be critical of. Even the return of Jo was well done. Wow!

Dean is going nuts – Sam's been missing for a week, and Dean has no idea what happened to him. He finally gets a call from Sam and rushes to his side. He finds Sam withdrawn – and covered in blood. Sam has no idea how he got here or what happened.
The guys do some searching and find some disturbing stuff. First, there's the car in the locked garage, which has a bloodied knife in the back seat. Then there's the gas station where Sam stole some liquor and beat up the attendant. Finally, there's the house with the body – a man with his throat brutally split. What's worse? His weapons stash indicates he's another Hunter. There's a security camera in the room, and the video shows it was, indeed, Sam who did the deed.
Back at the hotel, Sam says he's obviously turning evil. Dean has to kill him – he promised! Dean refuses – he couldn't live with himself if he killed Sam. "You'll live to regret this," Sam says, then clubs him over the head and flees. When Dean comes to, Sam's long gone.
Sam goes to Duluth, where he finds Jo tending bar. They talk, and at first things seem almost normal. Then Sam turns creepy. He gets jealous that Jo is obviously crushing on Dean, and smashes any hopes she may have that Dean might return those feelings. Then he starts getting grabby. Jo tells him to leave. He attacks, overpowering her and knocking her out. When she comes to, he's tied her to a pole and is stroking a knife across her face. Eeep! Even with the knife, Sam is working the "trust me, I'm your friend" eyes. It's creepy. He gets Jo to tell him about how her father died – apparently John and Bill were hunting a hellbeast of some sort, with Bill as bait. John revealed himself to soon, and the hellbeast killed Bill. Not quite, Sam says – the hellbeast mauled Bill, but John was the one who did the killing, to put him out of his misery. "My daddy shot your daddy in the heeee-eeeead," he sing-songs. Ouch.
Dean chooses this moment to burst in, and Sam switches to emo mode. Look, I'm evil, I'm going to hurt someone – shoot me! Dean douses him with holy water instead, and Sam flashes the demon eyes. He's possessed! Sam flees. Dean frees Jo, then goes after him. There's some cat-and-mouse business in a warehouse, and lots of taunting from Sam – you can't hurt me without hurting your brother! I'm going to use this Sam body to get close to every hunter I an,a nd I'm going to kill them all! Finally, Dean is lured out in the open, where Sam shoots him. Dean falls into the water. Jo comes looking for Dean, and finally fishes him out of the drink. She digs the bullet out of his shoulder (Ow!) and patches him up.
Dean figures Sam will be going after the closest hunter, and he's got to stop him. Jo wants to come along, but Dean tells her this is his fight, and he can't spare the time to worry about her getting hurt. Jo backs down. Dean tries to warn the next hunter, but evil Sam is cutting his phone wire. Then he goes to the door. It's Bobby! Bobby welcomes Sam with open arms. Oh noes! But before Evil!Sam can do anything, he takes a swig of the beer Bobby proffers and doubles over in pain. It was laced with holy water. Busted.
When Evil!Sam regains consciousness, he's tied to a chair and trapped in a demonic seal. Dean is there, and he wants Sam back. He tries to quiz the demon while Bobby performs an exorcism. They figure out the demon possessing Sam is the same one who possessed meg – and it's pretty darn pissed. Something's wrong – the demon isn't budging. Bobby sees a brand on Sam's arm and realizes the demon performed a binding ritual. It's planning on keeping Sam for good. Demon Sam breaks free of the circle and attacks Dean. How dare you send me back to hell! I'm going to make you suffer! He's in the process of beating the hell out of Dean when Bobby breaks the binding seal by… burning Sam's arm with a red-hot poker. Ouch! The demon is out, and Sam is free. "What did I miss," he asks, bewildered. Dean punches him in the face.
Bobby gives the boys protective charms to ward off further possessions. It's about time the guys got some of those… He also tells the guys about a hunter who got killed – do they know anything about that? No sir, Dean replies. When Sam tries to protest, Bobby tells them that they should stick to that story – the hunter's friends are going to come looking for what killed him, and they won't take "But I was possessed!" as an excuse. The guys have to keep their mouths shut.
In the car, Sam confesses that he was conscious for part of the time he was possessed – he saw himself kill that hunter. That must have sucked, Dean says. Not the point, Sam says – I really was evil, and you didn't kill me. In this case, that was the right decision, but what about next time? Look, Sam, Dean replies, Dad said I had to save you or kill you. I can't kill you, so I'm damn well going to save you, if it's the last thing I do. Finally, Sam looks like he might start to believe that.
