Tuesday, March 18
In tonight's Medical Watch -- does you dog look sick? Doggie flu is documented. And the fruit that can diminish the effects of diabetes. But first -- does stress damage the brain? A new study finds just the opposite ... genetic defects in the brain pre-dispose people to stress disorders. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports a genetic variation can trigger post traumatic stress disorder. A study of adults who suffered child abuse finds those with the stress gene abnormality had a much greater rate of PTSD than those who did not have the gene variant.
Diabetes Grapes
Eat grapes and get a grip on diabetes. Scientists at the Peninsula Medical School say grape skin compounds can cut down on the complications of the disease. Resveratrol found in grape skin protects against cellular damage to blood vessels that leads to heart disease, kidney disease and sight threatening eye problems in diabetics. In addition to grapes, resveratrol is found in peanuts and red wine.
Doggie Sniffles
flu is found to infect dogs. According to the American Society for Microbiology, the canine influenza virus is highly contagious. Different from kennel cough, dog flu can lead to fatal pneumonia. The first outbreak of the H3N8 virus in dogs was recognized in 2004. Dog flu has now been confirmed in 25 states in pets and racing dogs. Most affected dogs will get a mild form of the flu ... but all dogs exposed will get the flu and about 5% will die from it.
