China and Heparin; Chocolate Cholesterol; Snoring
Monday, April 21

In tonight's Medical Watch -- debate over a dangerous drug has China pointing the finger back at the United States.

Heparin and China
U.S. health experts concluded severe heparain allergies were due to contamination of the drug from plants in China. But today Chinese officials denied those claims saying problems with the blood thinner likely originated at the Baxter plant in New Jersey. Chinese health representatives will now visit the U.S. facility.

Chocolate Cholesterol
Here's some sweet advice from the doctor ... eat chocolate every day and lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. Yes that's the finding of University of Illinois food scientists. They found people who ate two 100-calorie Cocoavia dark chocolate bars per day lowered bad cholesterol by more than 5% and overall cholesterol by 3% unexpectedly. Researchers say study participants also saw a drop in systolic blood pressure. The study was funded by Mars, the makers of the chocolate bars. But researchers say don't assume the study is flawed because of that. It was a double blind study completely monitored by researchers and the American Heart Association.

Snoring
Yet another reason men need their wives ... a new study finds those with sleep apnea are more likely to stick with treatment and stop snoring if their wives stick by them. Soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses in men with sleep apnea causing them to stop breathing and start snoring. The condition can cause fatigue and lead to heart problems. Rush University Medical Center doctors found men whose wives fled the bed did not use their c-pap machines for treatment and had more apnea moments at night.
