Firefighters & Cancer; Erectile Dysfunction & Heart Disease; Juice Benefits
Monday, May 19
In tonight's Medical Watch -- a surprising health threat for life savers.
Firefighter Cancer
Firefighters are at increased risk for bladder cancer. Smoke and chemical fumes may go into the lungs, but they are filtered out of the body by the kidneys through urine. That damages the lining of the bladder increasing the chance for cancer growth. University of California researchers urge firefighters to get screened for bladder cancer.
ED Heart
The diagnosis can be heart breaking ... now doctors say it is a sign the heart may be broken. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology reports erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign for heart disease including heart attack and death. Doctors say that's why it's so important for men to report ED since it indicates a problem with heart health. Typically men have symptoms of sexual dysfunction three years before they show signs of heart disease. In every man studied, ED always led to coronary problems.
Heart Juice
A sweet way to prevent heart disease ... drink juice. Choose purple grape or apple juice. The antioxidants in both juices are powerful for helping keep blood flowing through the arteries. Purple grape and apple juice lowered cholesterol, oxidative stress and fat accumulation in the aorta. The findings published in the Journal Molecular Nutrition rank purple grape juice as best. The fruits are good as well but juice is best.
