Cover Story: Emerald Ash Borer
Destructive pest re-emerges in spring
April 30, 2008
It's right about this time of year -- early May -- that the emerald ash borer will start to emerge. Since it was first discovered in Michigan in 2002, the tiny green insects have killed thousands and thousands of ash trees in the midwest.
The borer comes from Asia and probably arrived in the United States in some shipping materials. First spotted in Kane County Illinois in 2006, the bugs have traveled all over northeastern Illinois, and all or part of eighteen counties are now under a quarantine. Experts predict 20 percent of the state's 130 million ash trees will be lost to the borer. As WGN's Jackie Bange reports, right now there is no way to control the emerald ash borer except to cut down the ash trees where the larvae live.
