Glacier Bay National Park Photo Gallery
July 11 - Glacier Bay National Park
A mere 200 years ago, this area of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in southeast Alaska west of Juneau was covered with ice. In 1989, naturalist and adventurer John Muir discovered the ice had retreated 48 miles up the bay. In 1925, Glacier Bay's 3.3 million acres were designated a national monument to preserve the glacial environment for scientific study and public enjoyment.
