Palmer/Copper River
After staying the night in Girdwood at the Alyeska Resort, the WGN crew headed to Anchorage and the Alaska Volcano Observatory at Alaska Pacific University.

While there, Tom met with Tom Murray, scientist in charge at the observatory, where they discussed the historically active volcanoes including Mt. St. Elias in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and the Valley of 10,000 Smokes in Katmai National Park.

From there, we traveled to Palmer and visited the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center where we interviewed Guy Urban about the 1958 and 1964 tsunamis that took place in Alaska.

As we drove the Glenn Highway toward the Copper River area, we stopped to photograph the beautiful vistas of the Matanuska glacier and valley and have dinner at the Long Rifle Lodge. Our hosts Dan Little and Tim and Kathy Horton provided incredible hospitality and the best home-made apple pie we've ever tasted.

We soon arrived at the Copper River Princess Lodge, where we would be staying for the next couple of days.

Tomorrow we tour Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and the towns of McCarthy and Kennicott.
